Playstation 3 + N95 8GB: Setting it all up

Ps3andn958gbI recently purchased a Playstation 3 80GB not only for the gaming, but also for the fact that it’s a Blu-ray player and because it acts like a media hub: displaying, downloading and managing your media. Well, It just so happens that the Playstation 3 is the first DNLA certified gaming console and the N95 8GB the first mobile phone to receive this certification. DLNA-compatible devices serve two different function: Server, Client or both. "Servers" distribute media such as image, music, or video files, and "clients" receive and play the media. The PS3 is a client from where you can display images, or play music or video files that are stored on a device with DLNA Media Server functionality over a network, while the N95 8GB is classified as a Mobile Media Server, allowing you to make the content available to clients like the PS3 and printers If this sounds familiar to you in some ways it is because it is related to the term UPnP, which was introduced with the N93, allowing UPnP devices to share digital media amongst each other. What do UPnP and DNLA have in common? “The DLNA certification program requires Universal Plug and Play certification for products that can be tested for UIC certification. Similarly, for products that support IEEE 802.11 wireless interface, Wi-Fi certification is required in order to obtain DLNA certification.”

To give you an idea what DNLA/UPnP on the PS3/N95 8GB can do, this video here should do the trick:

How was it done? How do you configure this setup allowing the PS3 and the N95 8GB to work together?

Step 1: Get an UPnP enabled wireless router and enable UPnP in the router setup page (although a wired connection should also work). The router will act as a backbone to allow UPnP and DNLA devices to work with each other. The newest routers should be UPnP certified, but many older ones like my Linksys WRT54GS already comes UPnP certified.  To access the router page, for most routers it’s a matter of entering: http://192.168.1.1/ in your browser.  The exact place to enable UPnP may vary by manufacturer and model, so you’ll have to check with your manual on that one. For Linksys routers it should be in the “Administration” tab under “Management”.

Step 2: Update your PS3 to the latest firmware. After that go Settings>Network Settings>Media Server Connection and enable Media Server Connection. Also Make sure the PS3 is connected to your network using your wireless or wired router. This should take care of the PS3 side of things; now let’s move to the N95 8GB.

Step 3: Make sure the N95 8GB is connected to the same network as the PS3 using your wireless network. Now go to Tool>Connectivity>Home Media>Option and Run Wizard. When running the wizard make sure you choose the same network connection as the PS3.

Step 4: First time you do this the N95 8GB will start to look for media for it to share. This will take a while. The process of running the wizard should make the phone visible and ready to be seen by the PS3. To turn it off just set to “Hide Phone”.

Step 5: If all goes well the N95 8GB should appear under Music, Video and Pictures on the PS3, allowing you to copy or view these media files on the PS3. On the N95 8GB you should be able to go into Galleries  and select the option of “Show via Home Network” for pictures and video and they should appear on the PS3. For Music just go into the Music Player, highlight the song and go to Option>Play>Via Home Network.

I have managed to use the PS3 to play vids, music and pictures from the N95 8GB. But selecting items on the N95 8GB to be played on the PS3 just didn’t work for me. The PS3 didn’t show up in items for the media content to be played on. If you happen to know a solution for this let me know.

Jeremy Jones ,

if you go to the DNLA.org site shows that 360 is not dnla certifed, only the PS3.

Hmmm...
"The Playstation 3 is the first DNLA certified gaming console"

The Xbox 360 has the same feature so the PS3 can't be "the first".

I also can recieve the media by accessing through the PS3 but cannot display any media from my handset by choseing the view on home network selection. Please someone figure this out. The reason for this GURSIMRAN SINGH is so that it can be done wireless and also some people have their TVs located in a difficult to get to position so its just easier and so much cooler too.

Thanks Devin, Great post.

y u ppl r takin so many steps to share only a photo or a picture or a video if u can do it by a simple method only by plugging usb cable into gaming divice , for eg. playstation3 and its other end to ur any mobile and share watever u want. it (media sharing)is not a bad feature. but mine method is simple cus u dont have to enable anything like UPnP.

but does anyone know if you can connect the phone (n95 8gb) through the ps3 and download and surf the net on the phone??

symbianaddict,

Hi. The N95 8GB with it's DNLA + UPnP support should be able to be totally compatible.
But seeing that the N95 has UPnP it just might work. The N82 is a mystery as you might expect that it's the latest device so it must have DNLA, but no word about that. So I would guess its the same as the N95, not like the N95 8GB.

great article. i didn't know the n95 had this feature. is this only available on the 8gb model? how bout the n82?

Thats pretty cool, but like the lady said it works on 'gaming devices' so I hope your not going to be PS3 bias and also do a guide to Nokia devices on the PC/Mac and Xbox 360 also (or at least the 360).
