Could the Nokia N95 8GB be gadget or smartphone of 2007? Or how about S60 Touch devices being the most anticipated gadget of 2008?

2007engadgetawardsThese are the questions being asked at Engadget for their 2007 Engadget awards. Based on reader nominations and a couple of their own, they’ve compiled a list of over 150 gadgets and technologies that made a big splash in 2007. As expected the Nokia N95 8GB is nominated in both the gadget or smartphone of 2007, while S60 touch devices are nominated in the most anticipated of 2008 category. Another interesting category is “handheld of 2007”,whatever that may be, where the Nokia N810 is mentioned. And lastly the Nokia 6110 is nominated as GPS of the year.

Now I’m not going to tell you guy what to vote for, but here at the Nokia guide I sure know what I will vote. (Vote for the N95 8GB!). As I was saying, head on to the 2007 Engadget awards page and vote for your favorite devices (Vote for the N95 8GB!). Spread the word around (especially the bloggers) to get as much votes as possible for your favorite device, whatever that might be : )

You have until Saturday, March 1st to vote.

Nseries Urbanista update: suggestions wanted!

Nseriesurbanistaupdate4_2 As you guys already know, Jose Montano "Jose_R.A.M” (www.mynokiablog.com), Jenifer Hanen “Ms Jen” (www.blackphoebe.com), Ryan Gallagher (www.cameratoss.blogspot.com) and me, Devin Balentina (www.thenokiaguide.com)will take part in the Nseries Urbanista Diaries. The Nokia sponsored Nseries Urbanista Diaries is a blogger global relay race where one blogger is dropped off somewhere in the world where he or she encounters challenges along the way and will then have to use the Nokia N82 to document and share the experience as well as using it as a tool to find his or her way to the next blogger who will continue the journey. The cool thing about this is that it’s going to be entirely interactive in the sense that you guys will be able to follow the 4 bloggers along the trip as we document the journey in images and text. We will keep you posted about the route and where we are located at the moment, this will allow you to suggest things to do, activities to attend and in some cases even meet up with some of you who are in the area! This will be an opportunity to showcase the N82 as a Global Traveler’s tool (to find your way around as I never been to some of these places), but as a way to share the sights and sounds, not just when we get back, but actually during the trip.

Now we need your help! I will be posting the routes below that each blogger will have to take and you guys can suggest things to do, activities to attend and in some cases even meet up with some of us. Have you been on vacation in the area or know one of these places pretty well, in that case it would be great if you guys can suggest things for us to do.

Try to do this on your IPhone: RC car controlled with the N95 acceleration sensor

It’s amazing what’s possible with the N95, even more amazing are the people that think of these things and that are able to make it happen. Such is the case behind the “ShakerRacer”. What they basically did was use a standard RC car and replaced the standard remote control component with their own microcontroller and a Bluetooth-module. After that they wrote a small application that translates the movements of the N95 acceleration sensor to commands that can be understood by the car. The end result is nothing short of amazing as the video shows. More info can be found here.

Blog update

Blogupdate

Hey guys, Devin here. I know, I haven’t posted quite as much as I normally do as I was busy moving my files from my old PC to the new one. Getting everything up and running took more than had originally planned. On top of that I have been busy with some projects.  Everything is almost set, so expect the usual Nokia Guide goodness.

Updates from the Guru

Updatesguruapplewar

One of the best places for all things Symbian and Nokia is of course Ricky’s Symbian Guru blog. He just returned from Nokia’s Go Play event with a bag full of goodies. One of them is Nokia’s newest MD-6 Portable Speakers. Head on over to his blog to see what he has to say. He’s also pointing to an interesting article at the Mobile Opportunity blog. The article talks about the upcoming battle between Apple and Nokia. It’s a long one but it’s definitely worth a read.

Update Hurricane Felix

Felix2007damage1 Felix2007damage2

To update on the Hurricane Felix post I did a few days ago, I must say that things went better then expected. The eye of Hurricane Felix passed just 80 km north of us. This meant that we were in the wind field, but somehow didn’t get the full fury of Felix . There was the usual power line and trees that went down and the internet connection was lost for a few hours, but no casualties to report. I was able to track the hurricane’s coordinates, check satellite imagery, post to the Nokia Guide blog and keep in touch with friends and family all on the N95. Here are a few pictures courtesy of Kitatin.

Under Tropical Storm Warning, Hurricane Watch

This post is going to be a bit different. We are currently under a hurricane watch, tropical storm warning as hurricane Felix heads towards my island Curacao. Internet access has gone down in the past hour, luckily I still have mobile access as I have my Nokia N95. Conditions are going downhill in the next hours. Will try to stay connected as much as I can through the N95.
